HOP #52: Why you need to watch out for purple sweaters with Matt McWilliams

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #50 with Matt McWilliams

Why you need to avoid Purple Sweaters

We all need to be pushed into the deep end once in a while…

I had an opportunity to talk with Matt McWilliams a few times before having him on the podcast, as well as participating in a number of affiliate launches for some of his clients. For those of you who don’t know what an affiliate launch is, he explains it around the 5-minute mark of this episode, but for those reading, it is essentially a team of people (affiliates) who are paid a commission for promoting your product.

Matt’s story blew me away because the big aha moment when he knew he needed to build his own business came down to a purple sweater!

Most of his life, Matt dreamed of becoming a professional golfer. Something he did accomplish, but not something someone could live on, at least not well. When he was a kid, he and his close friend Hunter, often joked about how terrible it would be to fail at professional golf and end up teaching golf lessons to elderly women wearing purple sweaters…well as you can guess by the title of this show, that day came and it set off a chain of events for Matt that turned his life from frustration to a life of abundance and having the opportunity to work with one of his dream mentors (to hear Matt tell this story, skip to the 8-minute mark).

Everyone on life has that purple sweater – for many, it’s the 9-to-5, and missing out on quality time with their family. Don’t wait for the purple sweater – go build your future today.

What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to build a six figure side business
  • The importance of jumping into the deep end (not dipping your toe in the water)
  • Understanding that life is not about money
  • Why you need to monetize your passion and find a way to live your vacation

Matt has graciously put together some incredible bonuses for you that will include his Guide to Affiliate Marketing, How to earn $100K, and his Guide to getting Affiliates to Promote your products (all insanely valuable stuff).

From near suicide to complete freedom and a 6-figure business (in 3 years)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #50

How Milena Cerin went From near suicide to complete freedom and a 6-figure business (in 3 years)

don’t die with the music still left inside you

From the moment I hit record – my jaw hit the floor…

Normally, when I interview guests, there is a typical pattern that goes something like this; they went to school, graduated from university, realized they picked the wrong career and hate the field they are in, and then quit to pursue their passion.

Today could not be further from that pattern!

Today’s guest opens with a story about finding love, or so she thought and being left to fend for herself and her children with absolutely nothing – literally begging for just enough money to be passed under the basement door – where she had been relegated too – just to eat.

This level of pain led her to an incredibly dark place, where at times she contemplated suicide just so she and her kids wouldn’t have to suffer…

That pain led to one of the biggest revelations, and what is now a 6-figure business.

Milena Cerin is a coach, speaker, and best-selling author. She has built her business on the ashes of personal tragedy and built a 6 figure business in 3 years. She believes living life on purpose is what brings happiness and success. Her message is that everyone has a voice.

I could not more thrilled than to share this as my 50th episode because it is one of the most vulnerable, heart-warming and motivating interviews to date!

What will you learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to live life on purpose
  • The reason you must embrace your childlike curiosity
  • How gratitude saved Milena’s life
  • How to discover the unique gift inside each and every one of us

When I doing the research for this interview, I was so humbled by Jordan’s story…

At the age of 31, Jordan suffered from 2 strokes – 2 strokes!

What was even more surprising, was how Jordan kept his focus on building his business to teach people how to play guitar…

After years of being told that I could never make a living with music, I combined my passion for guitar, love of working with others into a full time career.

This interview is one of the most character-defining interviews I have had to date and I know you will find the motivation to help you get started on pursuing whatever dream you have been putting off.

Life Lessons From Serial Entrepreneur Jeff Hoffman –,, & Color Jar

A little over 9 months ago, I stumbled across a podcast interview on Inside Quest with Jeff Hoffman (which you can find right here). Before the interview started I had no idea who Jeff Hoffman was – after the interview was over I would never forget the lessons he shared! That 5o minute interview completely changed the direction of my life, how I approached my career, and how I looked at the opportunity entrepreneurship offers to the world.

That 5o minute interview completely changed the direction of my life, how I approached my career, and how I looked at the opportunity entrepreneurship offers to the world. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to share his story on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast.

In this interview, I had the opportunity to dig deeper with Jeff Hoffman on some of the most pivotal moments of his career, as well as some momentous decisions he made after he chose to leave the typical 9-to-5 to fulfill a lifelong passion for travel.

One of the most powerful lessons Jeff shared was the importance of using money as a tool to scale and make a greater impact in the world;

There is no shame in making money, the shame is not using it to help others.

I originally reached out to Elliot after seeing a photo of him catching a massive 500 lbs shark from the beach…

What I learned next absolutely shocked me.

Elliot has some of the most insane stories I have ever heard, from spending 8 days at sea in a raft, to being headbutted by a 10 foot Tiger shark.

The most simple way to build a successful business

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Bonus Episode

The Most Simple Way to Build a Successful Business

If you want to take the island, you need to burn the boats

If you ask an underdog why the succeeded, the likely answer…

they didn’t have a choice!

In this bonus episode of The Happiness of Pursuit podcast, I’m going to share some of the insights I gained after 7 years of procrastination and failure and how you can set yourself up for success.

I was going through some Instagram posts and stumbled across a great post from Andy Frisella (@andyfrisella).

This quote and caption reminded me of a similar quote from Peter Diamandis, which has its roots from greek military philosophy; “if you want to take the island, you need to burn the boats.”

Both of these quotes underscore the importance of removing the excuses. If you look at someone who has succeeded, especially the underdogs, there is a common story behind that success – and it came down to the simple fact that success was the only option. Failure meant they lost their life savings, or they wouldn’t be able to put food on the table.

For most people, just thinking about that level of pressure causes anxiety – yet for so many of underdog stories it was out of necessity that they built something great. I am not saying you need to go out and bet the farm, but you need to understand the driving force behind motivation.

If you have ever heard Tony Robbins speak about what motivates people, he breaks it down to two simple things; pain and pleasure. Either the outcome has to be so painful that you have no choice but to change, or so pleasurable that you WANT to change.

So many people read motivational posts on Instagram, buy all the “personal development” books – and when its time for the rubber to meet the road and put these lessons to work – they do NOTHING…I’ve been there!

I wasted 7 years doing nothing. I gave up on two businesses just because it got tough.

It wasn’t until my wife and I were told that our daughter would likely have Cystic Fibrosis, Downsyndrome, and spent 8 weeks going back and forth to the hospital trying to figure out what was going on that I realized how much more life meant – ergo the PAIN part of the equation.

Fortunately, we had a little miracle, no health problems – but the awakening had happened and ever since then I have been on a mission to help people find their passion and take action to build a better life.
The moment I stopped procreating and simply removed the excuses I started to see exponential success in every aspect of my life and it continues week after week. There are still setbacks, but the way I handle them now has changed significantly.

What can you learn from this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

I wanted to distil these lessons into something that you can apply immediately to build a successful business, and start living the lifestyle of your dreams.

IMPORTANT: You MUST write these down – it’s far more impactful than doing it digitally, trust me – that 7 years of failure was from going digital, go old school on this one!

  1. Write down exactly what you want – and be specific – the clearer this vision is, the more chance you have of finding it (if it’s your dream job, where is it, who is your boss, how many people report to you, what does your average day look like, what does your best day at the job look like, what’s your title, what do you wear to work, who are your customers…you get the idea).
  2. What’s holding you back from getting there? Be honest with yourself. If it’s self-doubt or lack of confidence write it down. I have seen people with the WORST situations make miracles happen – they are around us every day – what’s important is for you to understand HONESTLY, what’s holding you back so you can start to eliminate it. This might even be some of the relationships with your closest friends that are holding you back – just be real with yourself!
  3. What is the one thing you can do as soon as you finish writing down steps 1 and 2 that will move you closer to your goals? Don’t waste your time planning, especially DO NOT write a business plan. Make this a super simple, easy to accomplish step. For example, if you’re trying to land that dream job, make it a goal to reach out to 1 person from the company to inquire about what it’s like to work there. The important thing is doing this RIGHT NOW – like literally, do not waste ANY TIME – you need to start building momentum and these little wins will go a long long way…

To prove how willing I am to help you reach your goals – send me a photo, a screenshot, or any proof that you completed step #3 and I’ll schedule a 30 minute call with you to help you with whatever it is you’re stuck on – better yet, tag the post on Twitter or Instagram with #HOP and @douglasjfoley and I’ll make it a full hour!

You have all the opportunity in the world – just burn those boats and you will take the island of your dreams!

Have a great week!

One simple way to 10x your growth

How to 10x your growth

One simple trick to 10x your growth

Do you ever wonder how the super-elite are able to accomplish exponential success?

It’s actually quite simple…they have the right MINDSET

“Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”
― Carol S. Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology Of Success

Some were born into money, some came from nothing, but what many of the entrepreneurs who are changing the world have in common is a “Growth Mindset.”

They were able to embrace failures, learn from them and grow. They didn’t let the fear of failure hold them back, but rather they embraced the learning experiences around them.

Here are 16 wildly successful people who overcame huge obstacles courtesy of Huffington Post (click here for the stories).

  • Bill Gates’ first business failed.
  • Albert Einstein didn’t speak until he was four years old.
  • Jim Carrey used to be homeless.
  • Bethany Hamilton had her arm bitten off by a shark.
  • Benjamin Franklin dropped out of school at age ten.
  • Richard Branson has dyslexia.
  • Stephen King’s first novel was rejected 30 times.
  • Oprah Winfrey gave birth at age 14 and lost her child.
  • Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times before creating the light bulb.
  • Kris Carr turned her cancer into a business of hope and healing.
  • Jay-Z couldn’t get signed to any record labels.
  • Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime.
  • Franklin Roosevelt became partially paralyzed at 39.
  • Simon Cowell had a failed record company.
  • Charlize Theron witnessed her mother kill her father.
  • Steven Spielberg was rejected from USC, twice.

All of these people have accomplished exponential results after what should have been career-ending setbacks.

How can you foster a growth mindset to accomplish 10x growth?

It takes time, patience and a lot of practice to develop a growth mindset, but here are a few ways to get started.

1. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable

The only way you can grow is to start doing things outside of your comfort zone. Starting today (literally when you read this) write down the most recent thing you passed on. It may be because it scared you, you were afraid what someone might think, or you keep putting off. The important thing for right now is to understand what the feelings are that are preventing you from being successful. Once you have a better understanding of what’s holding you back, the sooner we can break through them and begin to build an exponential future.

2. Never stop learning

When I was originally writing these tips, I had this as fail fast, and fail often, however with the amount of tools we have available to us, so many of the failures that plague early entrepreneurs can be avoided with some research. Seek out the most successful people in your industry and read their autobiographies, they are likely going to share some of the biggest challenges they struggled with. There is no sense in replicating their failures, learn from them and get a basic foundation before you begin so you can avoid some of the major pitfalls.

Once you have that basic understanding, be fearless of failure. Nothing will prepare for success like failure. How you rebound and learn from that failure, is the difference between a “growth mindset” and a “fixed mindset”. Like Carol Dweck noted, “The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.”

3. Surround yourself with great people

How to 10x your growth

Click to tweet

If you want to improve you need to surround yourself with people who you can learn from. Most people are familiar with Jim Rohn’s quote, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” The challenge most people have with this is learning how to connect with right people and build a relationship with them.

There are thousands of books, articles and YouTube videos on growing your network and connecting with influencers. What I have found worked the best is being sincere and honest when you reach out to influencers. One of the best ways to learn from them is to do an interview.

One of the best resources I have used to connect with some of the most influential entrepreneurs in the world I learned from John Corcoran. He has some great free tools to help you connect with people, click here, including some great email templates.

What to do next for 10x growth

Take action.

That simple step is the difference between exponential entrepreneurs and wantrepreneurs. They use their discomfort to their advantage, learn what they need to do to be successful, and connect with the right people to move their mission forward.

If you’re stuck and need help un-locking your potential send me an email, or sign up for the Platform Playbook where I will show you the exact steps I took to land my dream job doing what I love.
