3 of The Biggest Lessons From 100 Podcast Interviews

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #99

100+ stories about people who have followed their passion to build a business, a better life, or to simply give back!

When I started this journey, I had no clue where it was going. What became inherently clear quickly after I started – was just the simple fact that we NEED TO START.

Here are three of the most common lessons I have learned from all of the great guests.

Just Start

I remember putting off starting the podcast for months! I had so many excuses – I don’t have the right equipment, I need to build a studio, I don’t even know how to get it on iTunes and the most common of all, which everyone seems to use: I don’t have time.

The honest truth, I had too much self-doubt hiding in the background that I didn’t want to start.

Fortunately, I was able to muster enough courage to do it, and I haven’t looked back. It has opened so many doors, and unique opportunities.

The biggest result from starting has been the growth. I have met so many people doing incredible things that it has pushed me to expand my own personal limits.

There is no secret sauce to success, you just need to start!

As cliche as it sounds, you can’t finish a marathon without taking the first step.

Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

One of the most common themes I hear from a guest of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast has been their agreement that you MUST get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

That discomfort means you are growing. It is just like working out.

After a good workout, you like feel some pain, maybe some fatigue. After a few weeks of doing it consistently, you feel and look amazing.

The same thing is true on the mental side of your life, yet very few of us are willing to push those boundaries.

When I first launched my podcast and listened to an episode I was horrified. I couldn’t believe how my voice sounded, and how much I stuttered. Now, after 100+ interviews, it comes a lot more natural.

What was even more surprising, was how my interviewing techniques improved and helped in other aspects of my life and business.

If you want to grow personally or professionally, you need to seek out those things that make you uncomfortable and face them head on!

Believe In Yourself

Finally, the single most important lesson I learned from my guests, and it is a hard one for most to accept – you must believe in yourself!

Everyone has a skill or talent that the world values. No matter how small, or insignificant you think that might be – TRUST ME – there is a way to share that value with the world and build a profitable business.

Just this week I met an inspiring entrepreneur who is making an amazing business selling bacon as a gift product – yes, he’s making bacon selling bacon. What was impressive about his business, is he found a way to help local meat shops reach new customers by sharing his passion for quality meats.

There’s a powerful quote that I constantly draw inspiration from;

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. – Marrianne Williamson

The moment when you begin to believe in yourself is when you will begin to unlock your true potential.

The day before something is truly a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea. – Dr. Peter Diamandis

It has been a true honor to have the privilege of sharing so many great entrepreneurial and philanthropic stories. I look forward to the next 100.

Please be sure to tune in to LIVE Episode 100 at Facebook.com/douglasjfoley on Sept 21 at 10:00am PST/ 1:00PM EST (or catch the replay at douglasjfoley.com/100).

From Tragedy To Truth: A Lesson in Forgiveness and Growth

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #98 with Casey Cease

Would you ever be able to forgive someone for killing someone you loved?

When Casey was in his Junior Year of high school, Casey was battling a growing depression. After having his heart-broken, and hearing a distressing story he left a party he was hosting late at night, against the best efforts of his friends to keep him there.

As he was leaving his neighborhoodin despair, he changed his mind, turned around, and was headed home. As he was nearing his home his friend was in the middle of the road waving him, he swerved to avoid him and crashed.

When he swerved, he turned in the same direction his friend jumped. He hit him going 80 mph.

When he awoke in the hospital he was told by a State Trooper that he had killed his friend.

While he was in the hospital, the parents of his friend came to the hospital and forgave Casey!

As a parent to two young children, I can’t imagine their loss, but more mind blowing, I can’t imagine what it took for them to forgive Casey.

The challenge for Casey, he needed to find a way to forgive himself.

What Happens When You Hit Rock Bottom?

For years after the accident, Casey battled depression, and thoughts of suicide.

It wasn’t until Casey publicly shared his story that he began to heal, and realized the power of story.

In that healing process, Casey started to write a book about his experience to help others battle through their own personal tragedies.

In his writing process and publishing process, Casey saw how little support there was for those who wanted to write and publish their book. There were basically two options, approach a traditional publisher or self-publish, but there was little support in between.

He approached his mentor with the opportunity and eventually created Lucid Books, which is a Partnership Publisher.

The irony in Casey’s story, he is dyslexic.

I’m probably one of the only dyslexic publishers in the world.

When you hit rock bottom, the only direction left to go is up!

What will you learn from this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The importance of forgiveness
  • How to bounce back (from any situation)
  • The need to take action

Why Going All In Will Change Your Life And Business

If you want to take the island, you need to burn the boats

I don’t have a single tattoo, but if I get one that might very well be the one!

It has become a mantra in our house about adopting change. It reminds me of so many stories about the enlightening moments when entrepreneurs finally let go and went all into their business.

This weeks guest, Tara Bradford, took that leap – so much so that she moved to New York City without a true plan on how she was going to pay for her apartment.

That commitment left her with only one option – to succeed.

When you take failure off the table, you leave yourself with one option, and that is finding a way to succeed.

This is the exact same reason that you hear so many rags to riches stories following “I hit rock bottom…”

When you finally have reached bottom, the only way is up!

How To Step Up, Be Bold, and Play Big In Business

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #93 with Vanessa Shaw

From Stay-at-home mom to 7-figure entrepreneur.

When people pay more, they pay attention

I knew when I read Vanessa’s Bio, that the interview was going to align with the goal of the show to help people reach their full potential.

What I was not expecting, is how real, genuine and valuable the advice would be that followed.

After a few years as an active stay-at-home Mom, the burning desire for entrepreneurship peaked and Vanessa Shaw started a wellness benefit with 6 clients at $50/hour. As fast as the business win came, she lost the initial clients. Having to start over, she took that lesson and increased her fees. Within two years she had built a

Within two years she had built a 6-figure business after landing a large law firm. For the next 3 years, she enjoyed the success, but at the sacrifice of her happiness. Around the 5 year mark, she lost that client and nearly went bankrupt.

It was in that struggle, she rebuilt quickly only to take one of the biggest leaps of faith…

Vanessa sold their home, left Europe, and started completely from scratch in California, all while her husband continued to work overseas for 2 more years.

Most people, even those close to her, said it was insane, but her dedication, commitment, and drive have led to rebuilding a nearly 7-figure business.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • Entrepreneurship is NOT right for everyone (learn who should be, and who shouldn’t)
  • The importance of charging what you are worth
  • How to Go Big!
  • Why you need to follow your heart to do what you really want

How To Make Failure Your Friend (A Lesson For Entrepreneurs)

Flip your “What IF” from a Negative to a Positive – Bond, The Ad Strategist

This episode is one of the rawest and most authentic interviews to date (it contains some swearing, so make sure the kids aren’t in the car). We go deep into what entrepreneurship is REALLY LIKE.

If you have been following this podcast for a while, you know how important mindset is to building a business. In today’s episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, Amanda Bond, better know as Bond, founder of The Ad Strategist, dives deep into her personal transformation, and how she allows her gut and passion to guide her business.

What was shocking to me, was the fact that after numerous failures, Bond kept going and has built one of the most reputable Facebook Ad management businesses in the space.

In the interview, Bond shares the story about how she bounced back from a $10,000 chargeback after completing 3 months of hard work (for those who are unfamiliar with a chargeback, the client basically makes a claim and their money is returned). For most people, that would have been the end of their business – they would have thrown in the towel.

Bond, shares how working on her mindset helped her embrace failure, and allowed her to survive those inevitable tough times in business.

The Truth About Creating A Legacy

The Truth About Creating A Legacy

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #89 with Andy Amick, founder of Pale Spruce

If you want to create a legacy, dream big, work had, and be yourself

In just 25 minutes I learned how much we are capable of when we put our minds to it.

Andy Amick turned his love for mountain biking into one of the most interesting legacy building exercises I have heard.

As Andy’s passion for Mountain Biking grew, he discovered a race called “Tour Divide”, which is a 2,745 mile (4,418km) ride from Banff, Alberta to Antelope Wells, New Mexico. After a grueling 24 days, Andy completed the race at with countless stories to share.

What was unique about Andy’s story (aside from the run in with a Mountain Lion), was that Andy found it more challenging writing and publishing a book, then riding a bike for 24 straight days.

In addition to writing a book, and completing the “Tour Divide”, Andy has built an e-commerce business selling mountain bike specific first aid kits, along with a number of other great resources (find them here).

While Andy grew up in an entrepreneurial family, he did not inherit any of these natural traits. He is a software programmer by day and runs this business on the side as a legacy business he would like to pass on to his children.

So many industry giants are recognized for building billion dollar fortunes, having a fleet of jets, yachts, mansions, etc. We often fail to recognize the passion-preneurs who have built businesses that reflect who they are and the things they life – like Andy.

He has not only preserved his story in history by publishing a book but has built a set of products to help other mountain biking enthusiasts complete their race.

We all have a unique skill and passion that can be shared with the world. We just have to be willing to take the first step.

Read More about Andy Amick…

Until next week, I hope you find your passion, take action, and begin building the life of your dreams.
