How To Make Your New Years Resolution Stick

Make New Years Resolutions Stick

It’s that time of year again…

Everyone is excited about a “new year, new me”. The gyms are full, people are positive, and productivity is at an all-time high…at least until Friday.

I want this year to be the year that you not only keep that New Years Resolution – but start with one big enough to make meaningful change in your life that will carry you beyond 2017. Here are three simple tips to help.

How to make your New Years Resolution Stick.

1. STOP CALLING IT “NEW YEARS RESOLUTION.”

We are so bound by this tie to a ‘New Year, New Me,’ that we rarely seek to understand the rationale behind what it takes to change a habit, nor do we look deep enough to prepare ourselves to make lasting and meaningful changes in your life.

If New Years is a catalyst, or tipping point, or a motivator for you to make progress; use that as the initial motivator; however you’re going to need to connect to something bigger and understand the basics of motivation. It is controlled by two forces, PAIN or PLEASURE. You are either going to run from the

Simply put, motivation is derived from two forces, PAIN or PLEASURE. You are either going to run from the PAIN or RUN towards PLEASURE. The challenge most people face when it comes to setting longstanding goals is either the pain is not severe enough, nor is the pleasure great enough for people for the consequences of attaining the goals.

For example, if your New Years resolution is losing 10 lbs, it is unlikely that those 10 lbs are making life painful, nor will losing them provide enough pleasure to have an impact to make you stick to your New Years Resolution! Now if you said I want to lose 25 lbs to help run my first marathon – that’s got a chance of sticking.

BONUS TIP: If you really want to make it stick – GO REGISTER for a marathon right now! Don’t wait for a friend, just do it (literally RIGHT NOW)!

2. FIND YOUR PASSION AND DO IT EVERYDAY!

The whole premise of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast is to inspire people to find their passion, take action, and build the life they want. In doing so, listeners will find the happiness that comes with the pursuit of attaining that goal, versus trying to find happiness.

When you align your goals and activities with what your passionate about, you are more likely to be able to survive the tough days – the days when you feel like skipping a workout or eating the candy.

To emphasize this point, here’s a great story from Jeff Hoffman about how Evander Holyfield committed to working out, and how he stays true to his commitment to excellence (click here – skip to 39:30).

3. TAKE ACTION!

Regardless of whether or not we talk about a bucket list, or a new years resolution, the single choice to intentionally take action to chase your dreams will be the difference between a fulfilling life, and a life of regret.

There is no life-hack or simple tip I can share when it comes to making your New Years Resolution stick. All you need to do is TAKE ACTION – JUST DO IT!

As you begin your journey in 2017, I want to leave you with one simple quote:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. – Winston Churchill

Take a step every single day in the direction of your dreams. Every day that you do that, you move closer to whatever dream you have. If it’s running that marathon, try to run a little further every day.

You have a ton of greatness within you, and no matter how big your dream is – YOU CAN DO IT!

May this year be the year you start to pursue the big things and may happiness follow you in that journey.

Happy New Year!
