It wasn’t until I was alone, with the gun on the table when I realized I had hit bottom…
The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #72 with Wilson Horrell
It’s hard for me not to start every single episode with “I was blown away by this guest…”
Podcasting has been one of the most powerful gifts when it comes to my personal development. I have the opportunity to share some of the most powerful and vulnerable stories that are beyond inspiring.
When I started The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, I wanted to inspire people to find happiness in the pursuit of their dreams by taking action. In this episode, we not only talk about the power of action but more importantly how taking action saved Wilson’s life.
Wilson Horrell was a hard working, successful business owner. During a trip to Las Vegas, he hit the jackpot, literally, and won over $2 Million. Following that win, Wilson went on a wild ride with drugs and alcohol which led to him losing everything, including his family. While his story is a sad and common one amongst lottery winners, what Wilson did after is amazing.
What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:
- The importance of finding a community
- The necessity of taking action immediately
- Why you need to enjoy the journey, not the destination

More about Wilson Horrell:
Wilson Horrell is a 40-year-old father of two children, and a husband of a beautiful wife named Amanda. In the December of 2002, Wilson won $2.3 million on a $.025 slot machine in Las Vegas. By 2011, he had a $300 a day pill addiction and was not seen after 6am without a drink in his hand. After reaching rock bottom and waking up with a gun next to him in bed, he decided to get help. Through rehab, community, and 12-step fellowship, Wilson was able to get sober and has been sober since July of 2011.
About one year into recovery he found Olive Branch CrossFit and a crew of wonderful people. Somewhere along his fitness journey, he found the love of trail running and set his sights on the Lift Heavy Run Long 50mile/400deadlift club.
He has since become a partner in Lift Heavy Run Long and believes it is his mission to try and support and encourage people to be active and enjoy their lives. Wilson has no stance on the different varieties of exercise, but is confident that activity, of any type, will enrich people’s life.
Wilson started the Lift Heavy Run Long Podcast in an effort to build community and help people to feel comfortable about sticking their toe into the intimidating world of fitness and activity.
Wilson has a weekly blog on www.liftheavyrunlong and writes under the nickname of “Beefcake”.
