HOP #25: How two friends raised $3 Million to support female entrepreneurship with Mary Fehr

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #25

How two friends raised over $3 Million to support female entrepreneurs with Mary Fahr.

Female Entrepreneur Mary FehrThe timing of this episode could not have been better! With Christmas right around the corner, it was such an honour to share Mary and Sara’s story about how they have now raised over $325,000, for GROW. With funding from the Canadian Government, every dollar they raised has the power of ten. That means $300,000 from their bike ride grows to $3 million for MEDA’s GROW project in Ghana.

We all want to do good in the world, but for whatever reason we let our everyday life get in the way. Fortunately, these two friends set out to find a way to change poverty, and have directly affected the lives of more than 3,200 families through GROW (Greater Rural Opportunities for Women) project.

$3 Million and 3,200 female entrepreneurs and their families is a number that would dumbfound most people. I know when Mary told me during our interview, I had to pick my jaw up off the ground before I could continue. When they first started, they had a goal of $16,000, which is still an incredible feat, but as the story broke and once they completed their journey more and more donations poured it.

Their story inspires me because it shows that when you are passionate about something and you take action can you can a massive impact. I know Mary and Sarah didn’t think they would be changing the lives of 3,200 families, but they did.

This Christmas and Holiday season, I challenge you to find a way to give back and support a cause that will change the world. If you can’t find one you love, then create your own…

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode 21

How to follow your passion and start a new career with Matchmaker and Entrepreneur –  Kate Edwards

Before I can begin to introduce this week’s guest you need to go check out her LinkedIn profile (click here) – you will notice one of the most creative and well-written summary’s I have ever seen with a focus on five things:

1. I meet the coolest people
2. I do the coolest things

How would you like that as your “Job Summary”? That is exactly why I was so excited to share her story on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast.

Kate talks about her life in pursuit of the American dream – an ivy league education, Internship at Facebook and MBA from UCLA, multiple VP Roles. It’s the type of resume you see in future TECH CEO’s, with one big exception. Kate chose to leave the ‘typical’ path to pursue something she was passionate about and not only joined a start up, but founded one of her own, Textpert, with previous HOP guest, Ray Christan.

What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to find your passion
  • How to change careers to pursue what you love

Sam Payrovi shares how to build a business by solving a common travel problem

Happiness of Pursuit Podcast Episode 20 with Sam Payrovi founder of Saintly Bags

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #20

Sam Payrovi shares how to build a business by solving a common travel problem

I was introduced to Sam Payrovi, by previous show guest, Maggie Oldham from Episode #12. I am always grateful for introductions, and this week I am exceptionally grateful because the insight Sam shared into how he created an authentically NYC & American Made product is incredible.

One of the most interesting moments of the show (around the 8-minute mark) came when Sam shared his story about how and why he chooses to manufacture his weekender bags in New York. When he decided to make a customized bag, manufacturers, family and friends all told him that it couldn’t be done – well he sure proved them wrong. Not only is he doing it, but received an A+ rating from Men’s Journal in the process.

Sam also talks about how starting Saintly, has lead to a new endeavor, “Custom Consortium,” which is going to be a game changer!

He gives away so many gold nuggets for entrepreneurs throughout the show.

What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to build a business and defy the odds (and your critics) by believing in your dream
  • The importance of aligning your passion with a business in that field
  • How to make a massive career shift (from Investment Banker to Manufacturer and eCommerce Entrepreneur)
  • The importance of ‘wearing many hats’ when you first start your business
SAM PAYROVI on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast

One of the many popular bags from Saintly Bags on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast

More about Sam Payvori and Saintly:

As an avid traveler, for both business and pleasure, I could never find the perfect piece of luggage. I would search stores throughout my trips, airline magazines on flights, SkyMall, and every other place I could think of. What I realized is that we all travel differently. We take different length trips, go to different places, and need to bring along different items.

Our luggage should reflect how we travel, working to simplify our adventures, instead of complicating them by forcing what we can and can’t take. The trip that I personally found to be the most difficult to travel for was the weekend trip, especially when I needed to take my laptop with me. Who wants to take an rolling carry-on and a laptop, just for a quick weekend?

I founded Saintly so that we can all customize a bag that is unique to our individual journeys.

HOP #14: How saying ‘yes’ led to a year off WITH PAY to travel the world

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #14

How saying “yes” led to a year off with pay to travel the world with her family.

In episode #14 of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, I interview someone who has known me my entire life (she was actually at my baby shower before I was born). We reconnected when my wife went to work with her as a professor.

What blows me away about Heidi is her attitude to always say “yes.” This outlook led her, and her family, to take advantage of an incredible opportunity at her work that enabled her to take a year off with pay. During this time, they embarked on a roadtrip across Canada, up through Alaska, down to Florida with plans to head back to British Columbia and ending in South America.

If you’re wondering how Heidi was able to take a year off with Pay, and what life was like on the road then you will love this episode.

Enjoy!
