How to bounce back from anything (even the darkest of days)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #65

How to bounce back from anything (even the darkest of days) with Michael Weinberger, founder of A Plan for Living

It takes such little effort to have such a profound affect on your own life…

Every once in a while you come across someone who completely blows your mind – this interview was one of those times!

In this episode, I interview Michael Weinberger, who took his life struggle with bipolar, suicide and addiction and turned it into a business, A Plan for Living, that helps people make the progress they need to turn their life around.

A Plan for Living was developed by Michael Weinberger a software engineer who put his own life back on track using these strategies and decided to create a website application to make A Plan for Living available to everyone.

Michael was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17 and for many years lived with instability, out of control emotions and upheaval as a result of his condition. “I either self-medicated or didn’t take my prescribed medication,” he says, “I gained and lost and gained 150 pounds. I was expelled from college, arrested, married, divorced, started a business and lost clients. My life was filled with ups and downs and erratic behavior.”

At a low point at age 32 in the wake of a divorce, a failed business, relocation and another big weight gain, he took an intentional overdose of medication, which landed him in the hospital and on suicide watch.

Just reading Michael’s bio, I knew I was going to be in for an interesting interview, but Michael blew me away with his perspective and some really simple exercises that anyone can do to help reframe their state of mind – and refocus on the great things in their life to begin to make progress.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The Happiness Formula
  • How to have a phenomenal life
  • How to come back from ANYTHING
  • The importance of building a mindfulness routine

The secret to personal and professional growth

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #58

The secret to personal and professional growth with Sunniva Holt

[ctt template=”10″ link=”BeAaG” via=”yes” ]”There is no growth in your comfort zone” – Sunniva Holt, on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast #HOP #GrowthMindset @douglasjfoley[/ctt]

I was introduced to Sunniva by show favorite, Regan Hillyer who appeared on Episode #31, so I knew that she was going to be a great fit for the show, and she hit it out of the park (sorry, for the baseball analogy, but I still pumped about the Toronto Blue Jays postseason success).

Sunniva Hold is a serial entrepreneur, property developer, coach, speaker, social media queen and author of “The Hustle Life” (a must read). She is also a self-made multi-millionaire by the age of 30, and uses her expertise to teach people around the world how to accelerate their levels of successful results and outcomes from a stockpile of experience across multiple business and wellness related disciplines.

Like many of the guests of the show Sunniva broke the traditional mold of working your 9-to-5 to start what has become a real estate empire. There are so many great life lessons throughout this interview that you can apply to your life immediately.

One of the most interesting stories, was how Sunniva found a way to create an incredible personal brand that helped her health by eating raw foods, with her direct and “raw” commentary. That brand evolved into “The Daily Raw” (click here).

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The benefits of eating wall to your entire life
  • How to grow in every aspect of your life (professionally and personally)
  • Why you need to own who you are, and understand criticism (no the haters)
  • How to become comfortable with being uncomfortable

HOP #52: Why you need to watch out for purple sweaters with Matt McWilliams

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #50 with Matt McWilliams

Why you need to avoid Purple Sweaters

We all need to be pushed into the deep end once in a while…

I had an opportunity to talk with Matt McWilliams a few times before having him on the podcast, as well as participating in a number of affiliate launches for some of his clients. For those of you who don’t know what an affiliate launch is, he explains it around the 5-minute mark of this episode, but for those reading, it is essentially a team of people (affiliates) who are paid a commission for promoting your product.

Matt’s story blew me away because the big aha moment when he knew he needed to build his own business came down to a purple sweater!

Most of his life, Matt dreamed of becoming a professional golfer. Something he did accomplish, but not something someone could live on, at least not well. When he was a kid, he and his close friend Hunter, often joked about how terrible it would be to fail at professional golf and end up teaching golf lessons to elderly women wearing purple sweaters…well as you can guess by the title of this show, that day came and it set off a chain of events for Matt that turned his life from frustration to a life of abundance and having the opportunity to work with one of his dream mentors (to hear Matt tell this story, skip to the 8-minute mark).

Everyone on life has that purple sweater – for many, it’s the 9-to-5, and missing out on quality time with their family. Don’t wait for the purple sweater – go build your future today.

What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to build a six figure side business
  • The importance of jumping into the deep end (not dipping your toe in the water)
  • Understanding that life is not about money
  • Why you need to monetize your passion and find a way to live your vacation

BONUSES from MattMcWilliams.com/HOP

Matt has graciously put together some incredible bonuses for you that will include his Guide to Affiliate Marketing, How to earn $100K, and his Guide to getting Affiliates to Promote your products (all insanely valuable stuff).

From near suicide to complete freedom and a 6-figure business (in 3 years)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #50

How Milena Cerin went From near suicide to complete freedom and a 6-figure business (in 3 years)

don’t die with the music still left inside you

From the moment I hit record – my jaw hit the floor…

Normally, when I interview guests, there is a typical pattern that goes something like this; they went to school, graduated from university, realized they picked the wrong career and hate the field they are in, and then quit to pursue their passion.

Today could not be further from that pattern!

Today’s guest opens with a story about finding love, or so she thought and being left to fend for herself and her children with absolutely nothing – literally begging for just enough money to be passed under the basement door – where she had been relegated too – just to eat.

This level of pain led her to an incredibly dark place, where at times she contemplated suicide just so she and her kids wouldn’t have to suffer…

That pain led to one of the biggest revelations, and what is now a 6-figure business.

Milena Cerin is a coach, speaker, and best-selling author. She has built her business on the ashes of personal tragedy and built a 6 figure business in 3 years. She believes living life on purpose is what brings happiness and success. Her message is that everyone has a voice.

I could not more thrilled than to share this as my 50th episode because it is one of the most vulnerable, heart-warming and motivating interviews to date!

What will you learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to live life on purpose
  • The reason you must embrace your childlike curiosity
  • How gratitude saved Milena’s life
  • How to discover the unique gift inside each and every one of us

How to find the right mindset with Nikki B

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #40

How to make your passion your career with the right mindset with Nikki B

One of the most common questions I get when someone new I meet learns that I played Division I Golf in College is “Why didn’t I pursue a career in golf?”

A little over 10 years has gone by – and now I finally have the answer!

I didn’t have the right mindset. Fortunately over the last 10 years, through a lot of trial and erros, I have been able to get a better understanding of the basics around what is needed to be success in every aspect of my life.

Today’s guest has mastered that at such an early point in her career and is going to set the golf industry on fire! Nikki B is a recent graduate and fellow collegiate golfer. Surprisingly we didn’t get into too much golf talk, although I’m sure we could have killed an hour or two doing that – instead, we dove right into why Nikki decided to start her own business pursuing the thing she loves the most – the game of golf!

What’s most impressive about what she has accomplished is the trail she is blazing for future female golfers with the “Women Who Drive” community. Having a young daughter, it’s great to know there are women like Nikki setting the example for her.

In just over a year she has built an incredible following, and started to work closely with Kia at LPGA events, which led to her meeting LPGA sensation Michelle Wei.

What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • Find the thing you are most passionate about it – and never letting go
  • Surrounding yourself with the right people, and limiting contact with the wrong ones
  • How vulnerability led to amazing opportunities
  • Why you need to start NOW, and stop procrastinating

How Marriage, Entrepreneurship and a Newborn Can Co-Exist with Brad & Morgan Robison

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #36

How Marriage, Entrepreneurship, and a Newborn can Co-exist with Brad & Morgan Robinson, Founders of Marriage Solutions, Cash Practice Blueprint, and the Automated Therapist

Firstly, I want to apologize to my HOP listeners for the 3-week absence. As you may know, if you follow me on Instagram (@douglasjfoley) or have been following this blog, it has been a tough 8 weeks. I am one of the last people who will accept excuses when it comes to your own personal progress, however I had to make some huge adjustments the last few weeks and re-evaluate some priorities in life – mainly family.

The longer version of the story can be found here on a very vulnerable blog post (click here). The short version of the story…

My kids came down with croup twice, one battle with pneumonia, my wife throwing her back out, me having to remove a wisdom tooth, and finally laryngitis. The health issues weren’t the biggest challenge – it was the lack of sleep and still trying to fulfill my commitments to my career, this podcast, my business, and my family. There just wasn’t enough time, or patience, in a day to commit to doing all 4 of those things well and I came to the realization after many conversations with Carrie that family had to come first. I was under the false impression that the things I was working on were all trying to “help give my family a better life” when in actuality they just needed me to be present!

I was under the false impression that the things I was working on were all trying to “help give my family a better life” when in actuality they just needed me to be present!

Fortunately, the dust has settled and I am so excited to get back to providing you all incredible value, and what I’m excited most about today is our guest is an expert in the struggle I just went through.

Morgan and Brad Robinson are both couples therapists and entrepreneurs who have founded Marriage Solutions, Cash Practice Blueprint, and the Automated Therapist. They also have an infant, who has posed challenges similar to what I dealt with the last few months in their life and business.

We talk openly about how they are coping with the changes and how you too can find ways for entrepreneurship, your marriage, and your children to co-exist.

What will you learn in today’s episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast?

  • The importance of communication, especially listening
  • How to take risks and survive
  • Why “niching” down is crucial to success
  • How to adapt and survive business with a newborn
  • 2 crucial pieces of advice for creating an automated business (it’s right near the end of the podcast)

What Golf Will Teach You About Life and Business

Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies. – Bobby Jones

For those who are unfamiliar with Bobby Jones, he was an engineer, a lawyer, and the greatest golfer to ever play the game. While his only “profession” was as a lawyer, he remains the only golfer to win the “Grand Slam”. If anyone tried to do that today, they would be called ‘insane’, or an entrepreneur!

What Bobby Jones did over his career is what so many people today are struggling with – finding that balance between family, career and his passion for the game of golf.

Why?

Passion plays an incredibly important part in life, and when you learn to embrace it, it will be one of the most powerful sources in every aspect of your life – in business and personal.

How do you find your passion?

how to find your passion

If you are able to connect with your passion, you will have the stamina to put in the long hours necessary to succeed. Think about the last time you were doing something you hated doing, versus something you are passionate about  – if it takes 4-6 years to be successful, which path do you think your chances of succeeding are highest?

Entrepreneurship is a long, hard and often lonely journey. It comes with a lot of ups and downs, and to be successful you need to roll with the punches, or as Bobby Jones put it;

you have to play the ball where it lies

What we can learn from his example is that in order to be truly successful, we need to do the best with what we have. Accept the bad bounces, and welcome the good ones, and when all else fails play the ball where it lies.

How to overcome rejection with NY Times Best Selling Author, Michael Port

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode 34

How to overcome rejection with NY Times Best Selling Author, Michael Port

Have you ever had a big idea that you knew would completely change your life, and years went by and you “wish” you followed through on it? You’re not alone. I have spent the last 7 years failing, or giving a half-assed effort to pursuing my dreams. It wasn’t until I committed to going all in when I launched this podcast did I finally realize the importance of taking action.

What held me back? The fear of rejection! I was afraid of what people might think of my idea, my perspective, or not even know what a podcast was.

Today’s guest mastered the fear of rejection and has made a living teaching people the art of performance.

Called “an uncommonly honest author” by the Boston Globe, a “marketing guru” by The Wall Street Journal, and a “sales guru” by the Financial Times, Michael Port is a NY Times bestselling author of six books including Book Yourself Solid, The Think Big Manifesto and his hot new release, Steal the Show.

Interestingly, he is probably the only NY Times bestselling business book author to have also been a successful professional actor, guest starring on shows like Sex & The City, Law & Order, Third Watch, All My Children and in films like The Pelican Brief and Down to Earth.

These days, Michael can be seen regularly on MSNBC, CNBC, and PBS as an on-air expert in communication and business development.

What will you learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to overcome rejection
  • The importance of performance
  • How to tell stories that keep the audience on the edge of their seat
  • How to excel in any field
