How To Step Up, Be Bold, and Play Big In Business

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #93 with Vanessa Shaw

From Stay-at-home mom to 7-figure entrepreneur.

When people pay more, they pay attention

I knew when I read Vanessa’s Bio, that the interview was going to align with the goal of the show to help people reach their full potential.

What I was not expecting, is how real, genuine and valuable the advice would be that followed.

After a few years as an active stay-at-home Mom, the burning desire for entrepreneurship peaked and Vanessa Shaw started a wellness benefit with 6 clients at $50/hour. As fast as the business win came, she lost the initial clients. Having to start over, she took that lesson and increased her fees. Within two years she had built a

Within two years she had built a 6-figure business after landing a large law firm. For the next 3 years, she enjoyed the success, but at the sacrifice of her happiness. Around the 5 year mark, she lost that client and nearly went bankrupt.

It was in that struggle, she rebuilt quickly only to take one of the biggest leaps of faith…

Vanessa sold their home, left Europe, and started completely from scratch in California, all while her husband continued to work overseas for 2 more years.

Most people, even those close to her, said it was insane, but her dedication, commitment, and drive have led to rebuilding a nearly 7-figure business.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • Entrepreneurship is NOT right for everyone (learn who should be, and who shouldn’t)
  • The importance of charging what you are worth
  • How to Go Big!
  • Why you need to follow your heart to do what you really want

The Secret Behind Disruptive Billion Dollar Businesses

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #83 with Jay Samit, Author of Disrupt You

There is a big difference between failure and failing.

“Jay Alan Samit is a dynamic entrepreneur and ‘intrepreneur’ who is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on disruption and innovation. He launches billion dollar businesses, transforms entire industries, revamps government institutions, and for over three decades continues to be at the forefront of global trends…(read more)”

A little over a week ago, I had shared one of the lessons from Disrupt You on Instagram, when Jay Samit reached out to me to say thank you. Less than a week later, I had the opportunity to interview him on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast.

Through Disrupt You, Jay challenges readers to rethink their traditional approach to business and shatters any excuses that may be standing in your way. That advice is followed by tactical steps you can take today to being thinking like many of the billionaire entrepreneurs Jay has coached in his career.

One of the most simple, yet practical exercises he recommends is “to write down 3 problems you face every day. After a month, you have 90 ideas, and a theme will likely emerge. The bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity.”

What really blew me away, was the way he reframed the solution, “when you don’t know how to solve that problem, find something that does…”

Steve Jobs didn’t know how to code, and he created the largest tech company in the world.

Here is an interview with Impact Theory where Jay Samit dives deep into his book:

What will you learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to find a billion person problem (and a billion dollar solution)
  • How billion dollar businesses are built
  • The importance of hard work and patience
  • The difference between failing and failure
  • Why you should focus on the impact, not income

How to connect with Jay Samit:

More about Jay Samit:

Everyone from the Pope to the President calls on Samit to orchestrate positive change in this era of endless innovation.  Samit helped grow pre-IPO companies such as Linkedin and eBay, held senior management roles at Sony and Universal Studios, pioneered breakthrough advancements in mobile video, internet advertising, ecommerce, social networks, ebooks, and digital music that are used by billions of consumers every day.  Combining innovation with commercial success, Samit is the consummate dealmaker; his list of partners and associates reads like a who’s who list of innovators, including: Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg, Steve Jobs, Reid Hoffman, David Geffen, Richard Branson, Paul Allen, and Pierre Omidyar. Why you need to enjoy the journey, not the destination

It wasn’t until I was alone, with the gun on the table when I realized I had hit bottom…

-Wilson Horrell

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #72 with Wilson Horrell

It’s hard for me not to start every single episode with “I was blown away by this guest…”

Podcasting has been one of the most powerful gifts when it comes to my personal development. I have the opportunity to share some of the most powerful and vulnerable stories that are beyond inspiring.

When I started The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, I wanted to inspire people to find happiness in the pursuit of their dreams by taking action. In this episode, we not only talk about the power of action but more importantly how taking action saved Wilson’s life.

Wilson Horrell was a hard working, successful business owner. During a trip to Las Vegas, he hit the jackpot, literally, and won over $2 Million. Following that win, Wilson went on a wild ride with drugs and alcohol which led to him losing everything, including his family. While his story is a sad and common one amongst lottery winners, what Wilson did after is amazing.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The importance of finding a community
  • The necessity of taking action immediately
  • Why you need to enjoy the journey, not the destination

How to connect with Wilson Horrell:

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #72 with Wilson Horrell

More about Wilson Horrell:

Wilson Horrell is a 40-year-old father of two children, and a husband of a beautiful wife named Amanda. In the December of 2002, Wilson won $2.3 million on a $.025 slot machine in Las Vegas. By 2011, he had a $300 a day pill addiction and was not seen after 6am without a drink in his hand. After reaching rock bottom and waking up with a gun next to him in bed, he decided to get help. Through rehab, community, and 12-step fellowship, Wilson was able to get sober and has been sober since July of 2011.

About one year into recovery he found Olive Branch CrossFit and a crew of wonderful people. Somewhere along his fitness journey, he found the love of trail running and set his sights on the Lift Heavy Run Long 50mile/400deadlift club.

He has since become a partner in Lift Heavy Run Long and believes it is his mission to try and support and encourage people to be active and enjoy their lives. Wilson has no stance on the different varieties of exercise, but is confident that activity, of any type, will enrich people’s life.

Wilson started the Lift Heavy Run Long Podcast in an effort to build community and help people to feel comfortable about sticking their toe into the intimidating world of fitness and activity.
Wilson has a weekly blog on www.liftheavyrunlong and writes under the nickname of “Beefcake”.

5 Easy Questions To Find Your Passion

When you look at the people who have climbed to the top they all have a bunch of elements in common… which is a triangulation and intersection of the three things:
1. The thing you’re best at.
2. The thing you love doing.
3. Something the world values.
If these three things are in place that’s when the odds of success go up exponentially.

-Jeff Hoffman

This past year I had the incredible opportunity to interview Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline.com on Episode #42 on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast. It was a conversation that would change my life and helped me understand what is possible when you find your passion and take action.

When I asked Jeff; “why he chose to become an entrepreneur and what he was most passionate about?” His answer shocked me.

Jeff always had a dream to visit every country in the world. One day while at his office, he was on the elevator headed to the 4th floor where he worked. One of his friends and colleagues got onto the elevator and proceeded to push the 6th floor. When Jeff got to his desk, he realized he had yet to visit the 6th floor of the building to see his friend.

If I can’t even get to the 6th floor to see my friend, how am I going to see the world?

Jeff was so determined to see the world and so passionate about accomplishing that goal, it became the centerpiece of so many businesses. If you pull back the covers of what he has done, you can see how travel is at the core:

  • Founded Priceline.com
  • Invented the technology that allows you to print boarding passes at the airport
  • Founded “Unreasonable At Sea” – a philanthropic mission to solve the world’s problems by taking a cruise ship of millennials around the globe to witness and solve the challenges they observed

Jeff was able to build a life around what he loved – and is changing the world in the process.

How can you find your passion and start to change the world on your own terms?

Here are 5 simple questions that you can ask yourself to help you find your passion:

  1. What do you read?
  2. What do you watch?
  3. What do you talk about?
  4. What do you write about?
  5. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

When you find your passion, you will begin to unlock a world of potential.

How to Start a Business by Accident with Kris Reid

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #68 with Kris Reid, “The Coolest Guy in SEO” and Founder of Ardor Media Factory.

There’s a theme amongst many of this show’s guests that starts something like this…

“Well after I lost my job in 2008…”

Like millions of others, I lost my job in 2008 as a result of the economy downturn. I was fortunate to find another job quickly, but part of me wonders if I had taken the leap into entrepreneurship sooner what life would look like today?

Fortunately, this episode’s guest took that leap and has built an incredibly successful SEO business that operates primarily online. Here’s some background to give some context:

My name is Kris Reid. I am a Software Engineer, originally from Brisbane where I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology (A university for the real world).

I was backpacking around the world a few years ago and because of my love for software development, I built an online game. As the completion day came near for the game I made, I thought that I should learn how to market if anyone else is ever going to play with it. So, I started studying how Google works and learned about Search Engine Optimisation. I quickly discovered how important backlinks are – not just any backlinks, but only quality backlinks with relevant and compelling content on powerful industry-specific websites.

Then, I set out to build the perfect service to provide just that – high-quality backlinks with compelling content on industry-specific websites.

Fast forward a few years later, I now have a permanent office based here in Davao City, Philippines. It’s a quiet beach-side city that gives me access to virtually-unlimited skilled writers, editors, and content marketers to provide essentially limitless amounts of super high-quality powerful backlinks.

What I loved about Kris’ story, was the simple fact that his business came from taking action. He had followed a passion in building a game, however, he needed to find a way to bring it to market and in doing so found a great business opportunity.

That is yet another example of why I encourage listeners to simply take action! That simple choice will lead to so many opportunities for you in business, in your relationships and in life.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The importance of taking action
  • Why you need to pursue your passion, despite the critics
  • How to start a business by solving a problem
  • The importance of learning from the past (lessons from Stoicism)

From near suicide to complete freedom and a 6-figure business (in 3 years)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #50

How Milena Cerin went From near suicide to complete freedom and a 6-figure business (in 3 years)

don’t die with the music still left inside you

From the moment I hit record – my jaw hit the floor…

Normally, when I interview guests, there is a typical pattern that goes something like this; they went to school, graduated from university, realized they picked the wrong career and hate the field they are in, and then quit to pursue their passion.

Today could not be further from that pattern!

Today’s guest opens with a story about finding love, or so she thought and being left to fend for herself and her children with absolutely nothing – literally begging for just enough money to be passed under the basement door – where she had been relegated too – just to eat.

This level of pain led her to an incredibly dark place, where at times she contemplated suicide just so she and her kids wouldn’t have to suffer…

That pain led to one of the biggest revelations, and what is now a 6-figure business.

Milena Cerin is a coach, speaker, and best-selling author. She has built her business on the ashes of personal tragedy and built a 6 figure business in 3 years. She believes living life on purpose is what brings happiness and success. Her message is that everyone has a voice.

I could not more thrilled than to share this as my 50th episode because it is one of the most vulnerable, heart-warming and motivating interviews to date!

What will you learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to live life on purpose
  • The reason you must embrace your childlike curiosity
  • How gratitude saved Milena’s life
  • How to discover the unique gift inside each and every one of us
