How Focusing on Value Can Triple (3x) Your Business

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #75

How Focusing on Value Can Triple (3x) Your Business with Jen Berson, Founder of JenerationPR

Success meant being able to control my own time

The hardest part of starting a business is finding customers. The second hardest part of a business is parting ways with a client.

This past year, JenerationPR tripled their business, yes 3x, and Jen Berson attributes that success by parting ways with her first, and longest standing client. For most people, that would sound absolutely insane. Yet, when you take a deep honest look at your life and your business, you need to get clear about what’s holding you back and where you can deliver value.

Throughout this episode, Jen shares how the focus on value helped her scale her business. What was unique about Jen’s perspective on value, is it was not limited to the value she provides to her clients, but also to the people on her team and how she can add value to their lives by giving them flexibility in their daily lives.

What you will learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • Why you might need to fire your client
  • How to change your mindset to scale your business
  • The important of the value chain (internally and externally)

Why you need to enjoy the journey, not the destination

It wasn’t until I was alone, with the gun on the table when I realized I had hit bottom…

-Wilson Horrell

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #72 with Wilson Horrell

It’s hard for me not to start every single episode with “I was blown away by this guest…”

Podcasting has been one of the most powerful gifts when it comes to my personal development. I have the opportunity to share some of the most powerful and vulnerable stories that are beyond inspiring.

When I started The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, I wanted to inspire people to find happiness in the pursuit of their dreams by taking action. In this episode, we not only talk about the power of action but more importantly how taking action saved Wilson’s life.

Wilson Horrell was a hard working, successful business owner. During a trip to Las Vegas, he hit the jackpot, literally, and won over $2 Million. Following that win, Wilson went on a wild ride with drugs and alcohol which led to him losing everything, including his family. While his story is a sad and common one amongst lottery winners, what Wilson did after is amazing.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The importance of finding a community
  • The necessity of taking action immediately
  • Why you need to enjoy the journey, not the destination

More about Wilson Horrell:

Wilson Horrell is a 40-year-old father of two children, and a husband of a beautiful wife named Amanda. In the December of 2002, Wilson won $2.3 million on a $.025 slot machine in Las Vegas. By 2011, he had a $300 a day pill addiction and was not seen after 6am without a drink in his hand. After reaching rock bottom and waking up with a gun next to him in bed, he decided to get help. Through rehab, community, and 12-step fellowship, Wilson was able to get sober and has been sober since July of 2011.

About one year into recovery he found Olive Branch CrossFit and a crew of wonderful people. Somewhere along his fitness journey, he found the love of trail running and set his sights on the Lift Heavy Run Long 50mile/400deadlift club.

He has since become a partner in Lift Heavy Run Long and believes it is his mission to try and support and encourage people to be active and enjoy their lives. Wilson has no stance on the different varieties of exercise, but is confident that activity, of any type, will enrich people’s life.

Wilson started the Lift Heavy Run Long Podcast in an effort to build community and help people to feel comfortable about sticking their toe into the intimidating world of fitness and activity.
Wilson has a weekly blog on www.liftheavyrunlong and writes under the nickname of “Beefcake”.

5 Easy Questions To Find Your Passion

When you look at the people who have climbed to the top they all have a bunch of elements in common… which is a triangulation and intersection of the three things:
1. The thing you’re best at.
2. The thing you love doing.
3. Something the world values.
If these three things are in place that’s when the odds of success go up exponentially.

-Jeff Hoffman

This past year I had the incredible opportunity to interview Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline.com on Episode #42 on The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast. It was a conversation that would change my life and helped me understand what is possible when you find your passion and take action.

When I asked Jeff; “why he chose to become an entrepreneur and what he was most passionate about?” His answer shocked me.

Jeff always had a dream to visit every country in the world. One day while at his office, he was on the elevator headed to the 4th floor where he worked. One of his friends and colleagues got onto the elevator and proceeded to push the 6th floor. When Jeff got to his desk, he realized he had yet to visit the 6th floor of the building to see his friend.

If I can’t even get to the 6th floor to see my friend, how am I going to see the world?

Jeff was so determined to see the world and so passionate about accomplishing that goal, it became the centerpiece of so many businesses. If you pull back the covers of what he has done, you can see how travel is at the core:

  • Founded Priceline.com
  • Invented the technology that allows you to print boarding passes at the airport
  • Founded “Unreasonable At Sea” – a philanthropic mission to solve the world’s problems by taking a cruise ship of millennials around the globe to witness and solve the challenges they observed

Jeff was able to build a life around what he loved – and is changing the world in the process.

How can you find your passion and start to change the world on your own terms?

Here are 5 simple questions that you can ask yourself to help you find your passion:

  1. What do you read?
  2. What do you watch?
  3. What do you talk about?
  4. What do you write about?
  5. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

How to Start a Business by Accident with Kris Reid

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #68 with Kris Reid, “The Coolest Guy in SEO” and Founder of Ardor Media Factory.

There’s a theme amongst many of this show’s guests that starts something like this…

“Well after I lost my job in 2008…”

Like millions of others, I lost my job in 2008 as a result of the economy downturn. I was fortunate to find another job quickly, but part of me wonders if I had taken the leap into entrepreneurship sooner what life would look like today?

Fortunately, this episode’s guest took that leap and has built an incredibly successful SEO business that operates primarily online. Here’s some background to give some context:

My name is Kris Reid. I am a Software Engineer, originally from Brisbane where I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology (A university for the real world).

I was backpacking around the world a few years ago and because of my love for software development, I built an online game. As the completion day came near for the game I made, I thought that I should learn how to market if anyone else is ever going to play with it. So, I started studying how Google works and learned about Search Engine Optimisation. I quickly discovered how important backlinks are – not just any backlinks, but only quality backlinks with relevant and compelling content on powerful industry-specific websites.

Then, I set out to build the perfect service to provide just that – high-quality backlinks with compelling content on industry-specific websites.

Fast forward a few years later, I now have a permanent office based here in Davao City, Philippines. It’s a quiet beach-side city that gives me access to virtually-unlimited skilled writers, editors, and content marketers to provide essentially limitless amounts of super high-quality powerful backlinks.

What I loved about Kris’ story, was the simple fact that his business came from taking action. He had followed a passion in building a game, however, he needed to find a way to bring it to market and in doing so found a great business opportunity.

That is yet another example of why I encourage listeners to simply take action! That simple choice will lead to so many opportunities for you in business, in your relationships and in life.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The importance of taking action
  • Why you need to pursue your passion, despite the critics
  • How to start a business by solving a problem
  • The importance of learning from the past (lessons from Stoicism)

How to bounce back from anything (even the darkest of days)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #65

How to bounce back from anything (even the darkest of days) with Michael Weinberger, founder of A Plan for Living

It takes such little effort to have such a profound affect on your own life…

Every once in a while you come across someone who completely blows your mind – this interview was one of those times!

In this episode, I interview Michael Weinberger, who took his life struggle with bipolar, suicide and addiction and turned it into a business, A Plan for Living, that helps people make the progress they need to turn their life around.

A Plan for Living was developed by Michael Weinberger a software engineer who put his own life back on track using these strategies and decided to create a website application to make A Plan for Living available to everyone.

Michael was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17 and for many years lived with instability, out of control emotions and upheaval as a result of his condition. “I either self-medicated or didn’t take my prescribed medication,” he says, “I gained and lost and gained 150 pounds. I was expelled from college, arrested, married, divorced, started a business and lost clients. My life was filled with ups and downs and erratic behavior.”

At a low point at age 32 in the wake of a divorce, a failed business, relocation and another big weight gain, he took an intentional overdose of medication, which landed him in the hospital and on suicide watch.

Just reading Michael’s bio, I knew I was going to be in for an interesting interview, but Michael blew me away with his perspective and some really simple exercises that anyone can do to help reframe their state of mind – and refocus on the great things in their life to begin to make progress.

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The Happiness Formula
  • How to have a phenomenal life
  • How to come back from ANYTHING
  • The importance of building a mindfulness routine

How to turn fear into your friend (and create a business from it)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #62 with Kaitlyn Hatch

How to Turn Fear into Your Friend (and create a business from it)

I apply everything I’ve done, to what I’m going to do next!

I have a big confession to make…

Before I interviewed Kaitlyn, I had no idea what a “Creative Polymath” was! After understanding her wide range of experiences, skills and knowledge it is probably one of the most fitting terms I have ever heard (to find out, listen in around the 1:30 mark).

Throughout the interview, Kaitlyn shared how each one of her seemingly odd jobs and education prepared her for the next step in love. That willingness to learn, grow and embrace fear was a huge part of her finishing her first crowdfunded fiction book; “The Strangers We Haven’t Met” (get it here).

What will you learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • What a “Creative Polymath” is
  • How to embrace fear (and accept it as a part of life)
  • The importance of life-long learning
  • Why you MUST enjoy the process as much the end result

HOP #57: How to find and follow your inner voice with Laura Powers (@thatlaurapowers)

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #57

How to find and follow your inner voice with Laura Powers (@thatlaurapowers)

Have you ever had a moment in your life, where you had this voice inside your head trying to guide you?

You have two options – ignore and accept the outcome (and usually end up kicking yourself for ‘not trusting your gut’), or embrace it and ‘follow your heart’…

This episode’s guest has made a living from listening to these voices and helping people to communicate with spirits. When Laura first reached out to me, I was so drawn to her work. Honestly, I think everyone I know has a ghost story or two, so naturally, I had to ask about how she realized she had this skill and then more importantly when she realized the value in it – Laura’s answer blew me away.

Laura had known she had the ability to connect with spirits from an early age, but she feared the criticism that would come along with sharing her gift (something I think many of us relate to). Over the course of her career, she held numerous jobs, but she always felt like she had a greater calling and shortly after the financial collapse of 2008, she took action and has never looked back.

Laura Powers quickly rose to the top in her field in Lafayette, Colorado to Denver, Colorado, finally becoming one of the top in her field in Los Angeles in a matter of three years. She also totally transformed physically, going from unhappy, very sick, on sleeping pills, unemployed, in a bad marriage, and overweight (50 pounds heavier than I am today) to being healthy, fit, and living a life she loves.

Laura is also the author of 5 Adult Books, and 1 Children’s book, all of them available on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Laura-Powers/e/B009HW4YRW

What will you learn on this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • The importance of finding and listening to your inner voice
  • Why you should be open to the experiences around you
  • How to avoid letting fear control your life
  • Why you need to start chasing your dream immediately (no matter what)
