3 of The Biggest Lessons From 100 Podcast Interviews

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #99

100+ stories about people who have followed their passion to build a business, a better life, or to simply give back!

When I started this journey, I had no clue where it was going. What became inherently clear quickly after I started – was just the simple fact that we NEED TO START.

Here are three of the most common lessons I have learned from all of the great guests.

Just Start

I remember putting off starting the podcast for months! I had so many excuses – I don’t have the right equipment, I need to build a studio, I don’t even know how to get it on iTunes and the most common of all, which everyone seems to use: I don’t have time.

The honest truth, I had too much self-doubt hiding in the background that I didn’t want to start.

Fortunately, I was able to muster enough courage to do it, and I haven’t looked back. It has opened so many doors, and unique opportunities.

The biggest result from starting has been the growth. I have met so many people doing incredible things that it has pushed me to expand my own personal limits.

There is no secret sauce to success, you just need to start!

As cliche as it sounds, you can’t finish a marathon without taking the first step.

Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

One of the most common themes I hear from a guest of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast has been their agreement that you MUST get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

That discomfort means you are growing. It is just like working out.

After a good workout, you like feel some pain, maybe some fatigue. After a few weeks of doing it consistently, you feel and look amazing.

The same thing is true on the mental side of your life, yet very few of us are willing to push those boundaries.

When I first launched my podcast and listened to an episode I was horrified. I couldn’t believe how my voice sounded, and how much I stuttered. Now, after 100+ interviews, it comes a lot more natural.

What was even more surprising, was how my interviewing techniques improved and helped in other aspects of my life and business.

If you want to grow personally or professionally, you need to seek out those things that make you uncomfortable and face them head on!

Believe In Yourself

Finally, the single most important lesson I learned from my guests, and it is a hard one for most to accept – you must believe in yourself!

Everyone has a skill or talent that the world values. No matter how small, or insignificant you think that might be – TRUST ME – there is a way to share that value with the world and build a profitable business.

Just this week I met an inspiring entrepreneur who is making an amazing business selling bacon as a gift product – yes, he’s making bacon selling bacon. What was impressive about his business, is he found a way to help local meat shops reach new customers by sharing his passion for quality meats.

There’s a powerful quote that I constantly draw inspiration from;

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. – Marrianne Williamson

The moment when you begin to believe in yourself is when you will begin to unlock your true potential.

The day before something is truly a breakthrough, it’s a crazy idea. – Dr. Peter Diamandis

It has been a true honor to have the privilege of sharing so many great entrepreneurial and philanthropic stories. I look forward to the next 100.

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #93 with Vanessa Shaw

From Stay-at-home mom to 7-figure entrepreneur.

When people pay more, they pay attention

I knew when I read Vanessa’s Bio, that the interview was going to align with the goal of the show to help people reach their full potential.

What I was not expecting, is how real, genuine and valuable the advice would be that followed.

After a few years as an active stay-at-home Mom, the burning desire for entrepreneurship peaked and Vanessa Shaw started a wellness benefit with 6 clients at $50/hour. As fast as the business win came, she lost the initial clients. Having to start over, she took that lesson and increased her fees. Within two years she had built a

It was in that struggle, she rebuilt quickly only to take one of the biggest leaps of faith…

Vanessa sold their home, left Europe, and started completely from scratch in California, all while her husband continued to work overseas for 2 more years.

Most people, even those close to her, said it was insane, but her dedication, commitment, and drive have led to rebuilding a nearly 7-figure business.

How To Find Happiness

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #91

Find your gift and give it to the world! – WordPlay T.Jay

I was blown away by the insight and tactical advice that WordPlay T. Jay shared in this episode. After struggling with depression, he found music. That passion grew inside of him, and he knew that he could share his gift with the world and spread happiness and a message of positivity in a genre typically filled with violence.

WordPlay T. Jay broke through after hustling his way onto MTV’s RapFix.

What surprised me in this interview, was his insight into music is a skill that anyone can learn.

If you work hard enough, anything can be learned and perfected. It is just about getting on stage.

The Greatest Lessons in Entrepreneurship from Sergio Garcia’s Masters Win

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #81 Sergio Garcia’s Masters Win

The Greatest Lessons in Entrepreneurship from Sergio Garcia’s Masters Win

In an 18 year professional career, marked by four runner-up finishes, two of which were decided by playoffs, and years of criticism and personal struggle; Sergio Garcia finally won his first major at The Masters.

What was astounding about his win, wasn’t the years of heartbreak, or even the underdog story in itself, he was actually a favorite in most odds. It was the fact that Sergio Garcia never gave up, and not just in this tournament, but in his pursuit of a major championship.

Here is a quick snapshot of Sergio Garcia’s near Major Championship Wins:

Sergio Garcia Green Jacket

  • 1999 PGA Championship – finished second to Tiger Woods, but was made famous when he hit a miraculous blind shot with his eyes closed followed by a sprint and scissor kick to see where the ball had landed
  • 2007 Open Championship – led after all three rounds, made bogey on 18 to eventually lose to Pádraig Harrington in a 4-hole playoff
  • 2008 Tour Championship – after leading again in the final round, Pádraig Harrington came from behind to win by two, leaving Sergio Garcia in second again
  • 2014 Open Championship – finished second to a red-hot Rory McIlroy
  • 2017 Masters – won in a playoff over Justin Rose

Why was Sergio Garcia’s win at The Masters so important?

He proved two very important lessons for success: 1. You have to be in it for the long game, and 2. Never, ever give up.

Why you have to be in it for the long game

While life may seem “short” at times, we have an abundance of opportunity. No matter what your career may be, or what goals you have in life, there is actually a lot of time and ways to get there. Sergio Garcia has played in 73 Major PGA Tournaments and in 4 different times finished second.

There are two ways to look at this, either Sergio is cursed, or at some point, he is bound to win.

Phil Mickelson went through a similar criticism before he eventually won The Masters.

The fact of the matter is simple, the more times you put yourself in a position to win, the more likely you will succeed. For Sergio, he believed it was a matter of time, and at The 2017 Masters, he was right.

For you, regardless of your career, or business, you need to find ways to put yourself in the position to win. You won’t win all the time, and you’ll even lose some heartbreaking deals, but more often than not you will finish on top.

Why you should never, ever give up.

On the 13th hole at Augusta, Sergio Garcia hit his ball left of the creek into the trees. He was forced to take a drop and a penalty stroke. At that point in time, Justin Rose had a two-stroke lead, and by most odds, would likely be stretched to four-strokes after this hold.

Remarkably, Garcia made par and Rose three-putted for par. Garcia went on to birdie 14, and eagle 15. The momentum had switched.

When you are patient and consistent, success is inevitable. The moment that you decide you are not worthy, or that the feat is impossible, you are right! When you grind, no matter the circumstances, eventually you will come out on top.

After 4 runner-up finishes, 37 major tournaments, and countless setbacks, Sergio Garcia finally won his major.

You too can win. The recipe is simple: be patient, consistent, and never give up, EVER!

How To Write Your Own Success Story

The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast – Episode #79

How To Write Your Own Success Story with Marie Wiese, Founder of Marketing CoPilot

I knew this podcast episode was going to be great…

A Canadian, Content Marketer, Best Selling Author, and Entrepreneur – that’s a recipe for a perfect guest and Marie Wiese didn’t disappoint!

In this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast, Marie Wiese talks about her entrepreneurial journey and how she was able to literally write her own success story. After being gifted a typewriter when she was a little girl by her grandmother, that gift for storytelling, led to a career in PR. That career quickly led down an entrepreneurial path with a startup, which, like many other dot-com businesses in the mid-2000’s, unfortunately, led to a financial collapse.

Marie bounced back and started consulting. After reflecting on how she helped the business grow to 100+ employees and raised over $25 million in funding, she knew she could repeat that process. Years later, Marie continues to run Marketing CoPilot and “help companies build digital marketing programs that make a difference. We deliver strategic guidance and tactical execution so companies can jump-start their digital marketing efforts to be more engaging, customer-centric and competitive.”

What you will learn in this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast:

  • How to overcome fear
  • The importance of asking for help
  • What Marie’s next book will be about
